Divas Starring Frank Marino
Divas Starring Frank Marino has been on the Las Vegas Strip for 28 years. Well, Frank Marino as a female impersonator has been on the Las Vegas Strip for 28 years. He's been sued by Joan Rivers (whom he impersonates, moreso earlier than now — talk about a moving target!), and he appeared in Miss Congeniality 2 with Sandra Bullock. And with true drag queen, err... female impersonator, spirit, he survived the unceremonious closing of "An Evening At La Cage" at the Riviera after 24 years only to open his own show down the Strip a few months later. You've got to admire someone who keeps on going, especially in a town where even huge shows close quicker than you can say "Viva Elvis."
Now at The Quad, Frank and his pals put on quite an entertainment extravaganza. The 75 minute show of costume changes and dancers will leave you with a dancing-in-your-seats energy, and truthfully, I wasn't expecting to like it. I'd seen "An Evening At La Cage" more than a decade ago and couldn't really remember much about it. Drag, err... female impersonator, shows aren't really my thing. It's rare to find a good one. More often than not, they're more akin to bad clown shows; not funny and with makeup that's scary.
Divas is actually good. On the night we attended, we saw powerhouses such as Cher and Celine Dion along with Tina Turner, Madonna, and Britney Spears. And as with any show, there are strong points and weak. The gals I just mentioned were spot on. Bette Midler and Liza Minelli were lacking. With a comedy version of "All The Single Ladies" by Beyonce thrown in to the mix, we were laughing while simultaneously being mesmerized by just how much some of the guys looked like the diva... not Beyonce but that was the point.
Six man-candy dancers appear in most of the setups in various states of shirtlessness, and you'll likely see Derrick Berry as Britney Spears, too. You may remember him from his stint on "America's Got Talent."
Channel 8 is the local CBS affiliate here in Las Vegas, and a shortly after Frank started his own show, they went behind the scenes to check it out.
Frank was also on Extra and Toddlers & Tiaras.
When you're next in Vegas and want a show that's a little different than you can see back home, be sure to check out Divas Starring Frank Marino. You'll leave impressed and glad you don't have to go through all that makeup and those costume changes!
